If you’ve got a little extra space in the home, then having a few ideas of what to do with it can help you in many ways. You can make sure that you’re using the room wisely, and making the most of the space that you have.
Any extra space in the home can be a dream for many, so it makes sense to take advantage of what you’ve got.
Take a garage or an outbuilding, for example. If you don’t use the space for storing your car, then it can be a pretty wasted space. It may be a place for some storage, but other than that, it can be a large space that isn’t being used to its potential.
There are a number of things that you could do with this kind of space. If you’re not too sure where to begin, then here are some ideas to help you make the most of a garage space, whether you choose to convert it or not.
One sure fire way to make the space in a garage look larger is to reduce the amount of things that use up space on the floor. When floor space is reduced, it makes the whole room look smaller.
But if you want to fit more in, and not shrink the size of the room, then using hanging storage can be a really good idea.
It could be for things like bikes, as you can hang some hook from the wall or ceiling for your bikes.
It could be shelving that hangs from the ceiling, much like an old-school pulley clothes-dryer from back in the day.
You can get creative with hanging storage, depending on what you need to store. But taking things off the floor will make the space look less cluttered and larger.
With more and more of us having the chance to work flexibly or to work from home, it can be really handy if we have a space that we can dedicate to working, and set up as a bit of an office space.
So if most of the time, your garage sits empty, then converting it into an office could mean no more working from your kitchen table or with your laptop on your lap.
Making sure that you get plenty of natural light is a good idea, so you may need to install new windows.
Of course, you need to get electricity and the WiFi to get through to the garage, otherwise trying to work can prove pretty unproductive!
To make the room a little more multi-purpose, you could even put in a futon or sofa bed, so that it doubles up as a place for guests to sleep (as well as when you need to take a work break).
If you have children, teenagers, or just have a love of music, then having a dedicated space for music can be a great addition to the home.
The good news is that as it is set away from the main house, you can be as noisy as you like, especially if you went down the insulating and soundproofing route.
You could click here for more about soundproofing walls, but it can be a pretty inexpensive way to make the room fit for purpose.
As it means that some pretty expensive equipment could be in there, from musical instruments, to DJ equipment or recording equipment, it can be a good idea to check on the doors and windows that are in there.
Getting some newer ones (think double or triple glazed windows, for example), can be an easy way to keep your things safer, as well as making the space more energy efficient.
If your home is feeling a little bit cramped or you want to create extra space for the kids, for example, then it can be an easy win to convert the garage into a family-friendly lounge space.
It could be a second lounge, or one just for the kids. You can make it what you want, but it could be a place that offers extra seating space, a playroom, a place to play games, or even somewhere else to eat, with a breakfast bar and seating installed into it.
The important note here, like with creating a home office, is that you need to think about the lighting in the room.
It won’t be a great place to be if there is very little in the way of natural light. So think about which side of the garage the sun comes in from, and get new windows if needed.
When it comes to putting your house up for sale, it can add value if you’re able to sell it as a home with an extra bedroom (calling it a five bed house, rather than a four bed, for example).
So one good idea for your garage conversion (unless you dream of having a gym at home or something fancy like a library), is to convert it into another bedroom.
It can be a little odd having a bedroom on the ground floor, but a bedroom is still a bedroom. You could keep it as a guest bedroom if you don’t have direct need for it. But it certainly will add value.
Just make sure that you get the room insulated, and secure, so that it can be a warm and safe place to be. The chances are that it will be a pretty good size for a bedroom too.
But how will you get access into the house? If there isn’t an existing passageway into the house, then that is something to think about too.
The great thing about a garage conversion, or just adjusting how you currently use your garage, is that it is completely up to you.
You can go all out if you have the budget to do that, or keep things simple and have it as a half garage and half gym room if needed.
What would you do first?
