Do you need to get a better night’s sleep?
In this blog post, we are going to take a look at a couple of the major reasons why women today don’t get enough sleep.
The first reason is that our babies don’t get enough sleep, and so neither do we!
The second is because we don’t know how to switch off. So, let’s take a look…
Ensuring your baby has a better night’s sleep so that you have a better sleep too…
Becoming a mother is one of the most precious and beautiful things anyone can experience. Bringing a baby into the world offers intense moments of joy and happiness and a feeling which simply cannot be explained nor replicated.
However, becoming a mother is also a difficult challenge; there is the sheer worry that anything could happen to our little child and then there is the lack of sleep and the long restless nights we are assured to go through.
Nevertheless, whilst there is nothing that will take away the worry we feel about the thing that now means the most to us in the entire world, there are things which can be done to help our little loved one have a better night’s sleep and consequently ensure that we get a decent bit of rest.
One popular way to get a baby to have a good night’s sleep is through modern swaddling. This is where products such as baby sleeping bags and baby sleepsuits are used in order to ensure your little one has a better sleep. This works as they restrict a child’s movement but they also provide comfort and by doing this they allow the child to feel snug and relaxed and thus they will sleep for a longer period of time.
Another method which is commonly used is the combination of increasing a baby’s activity during the day as well as decreasing the length of their naps. This will ensure that your little one is feeling much more tired when it comes to bedtime and so not only will they sleep for a lengthier amount of time than usual but they will also fall asleep much more quickly.
An innovative method that you can try is experimenting with different sounds, which will soothe your baby and send them to sleep. Once you have found the sound that works you will be able to play it whenever your baby is restless.
In addition to this, there are several small changes you can make in an attempt to ensure you and your baby get a much better night’s sleep.
For example, you can increase the intake of solid food your baby has before bedtime as this will make them feel fuller. As you know yourself, when we are feeling full we consequently feel sleepier.
Furthermore, you should try to install some routine into your baby’s sleeping pattern. By this I mean that you should establish a set time to put your baby to bed each night and you should try to get them to fall asleep in their cot rather than simply falling asleep whenever and wherever.
You should also try to develop a routine and pattern when it comes to the baby’s napping.
The importance of switching off your phone for a better night’s sleep
We all do it… Lie in bed and use our mobile phones; ‘just one more text’ or ‘just one more game of Candy Crush’.
The trouble is, we expect to simply turn our phone off and go to sleep straight away. In fact, some of us place the phone next to us, just in case anyone needs to get in touch, and then we go to sleep.
While a lucky few of you may be able to drift off straight away, there is no denying that this is having a bad impact on your health. A quality night’s sleep is almost impossible if you keep your phone turned on, and your sleeping pattern will be all over the place too.
There are many reasons why using your phone before bed and keeping it switched on during your sleep is bad for you.
Scientific data proves that leaving your mobile phone on can cause the promotion of wakefulness, as the light emitted, no matter how small it seems, is sufficient enough to miscue the brain and disturb our circadian rhythms.
It suppresses the release of melatonin and enhances our alertness. It’s so important to create a dark space, which means turning all of your devices off so that you can fall asleep at an appropriate time at night and you can be alert in the morning.
Your mobile phone essentially interferes with your body’s natural rhythm. It will trick your body into thinking that it is daytime and this is mainly because of the light, which leads to the retina cells being stimulated. This is the area at the back of the eye that sends signals to the brain, including what time it is. Thus, you can see how your mobile phone will miscue the brain, as mentioned.
This is not the only issue that can arise if you choose to sleep with your mobile phone switched on in your bedroom.
At the very minimum, it will make you hyper-vigilant, which means you will probably not get the restorative sleep you require, as your sleep is more likely to be disturbed.
Other sleeping problems, such as insomnia, can be triggered through keeping your mobile phone on while you sleep, with some people reporting headaches and dizziness because of it.
When you take these points into account, it is not difficult to see why you should turn off your phone before you go to bed. This is essential for a good night’s sleep and your overall well-being.
There are some other things you can do too. You can buy pillows online and a new duvet, and even a new mattress, to create a more comfortable sleep zone. You should also try to go to bed and wake up at the same time. Keeping a journal can also help if your worries keep you awake.
Hopefully, these tips can help you to get to the land of nod with greater ease!
